A Serene Suburban Ambience of Bangkok
Situated on the bank of the Bangkhun Sri River, better known as the Chakphra Canal, Taling Chan Floating Market boasts a serene suburban environment within less than 20 mins’ drive from Sanam Luang and the Grand Palace. The life of the residents by the Chakphra Canal, still retains the atmosphere and style of true nature reflecting the attachment to the river of the capital dwellers. Hence, Taling Chan Floating Market possesses its endless attraction to Thais and foreigners alike.
What’s so charming about this floating market is the way they sell things which, unlike most places, is self sufficient. On the weekends, local people bring from their homes small portions of various home grown vegetables and fruits to sell to tourists. No wonder there is also an abundance of special traditional Thai foods and desserts awaiting you to try at Taling Chan Floating Market. Some housewives come here to sell freshly cooked meals which are apparently their signature family recipes.
Besides, since this market is located on the Thonburi side where a lot of people grow orchids, there are plenty of colourful orchid plants for sale at reasonable prices. Other species of plants can be purchased here as well. After your stomach is full, now it’s time to unwind. Many tourists love to do some light activities. The most popular one is taking a long-tail boat trip to indulge with the beautiful nature along the canal.
Along the route, the scenery is so beautiful that it is like a painting. You will see local children swim or jump into the clear water with the Thai style houses standing in the background. In addition, you will have opportunities to see the magnificent old temples built in the late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin styles. This market, which operates on Saturdays and Sundays 08.00 -16.00 only, is located in front of the Taling Chan District Office in the west of Bangkok. The boat tour starts at 10.00, 11.00, 13.00 and 14.00 hrs (2 hours trip).
